| This SoHo pan-Latin eatery with an emphasis on the cuisine of Mexico is decked out like a south-of-the-border burg, complete with walls resembling an adobe house. In Dubuque or Dallas, such themery equals instant cheese, but Besito has managed to keep it SoHo cool. It doesn't hurt that the spacious main dining room, filled with warm woods and banquettes swathed with Mexican blankets, has the intimacy of a room half its size. It also doesn't hurt that the fare is more fit for a king than a peasant. The Havana Plate, complete with juicy pulled pork and fried yucca, is one of the most popular items on the menu for good reason. The sautéed shrimp with garlic-chili arbol sauce might make you want to make this village your permanent address. If not, the sangría---which arrives in pitchers so big the staff has to pour it for guests---may make you dust off that passport. |
