Trends come and go, but Bistro Elan has remained one of the most consistent treats on Palo Alto's dining scene. The warm, romantic two-room restaurant, which is adorned with black and white pictures of France, should be required dining for all young chefs. The menu is an artful balancing act that updates classic European dishes without falling prey to showy indulgence. The presentation is uncommonly elegant, especially on such popular appetizers as the fresh Maine crab cocktail, served in an oversized cocktail glass with yogurt, cucumber, onion and avocado. Duck dishes are particularly excellent, such as sautéed Sonoma foie gras and duck confit. Other highlights of the entrée menu include choice cuts of meat from Niman Ranch, including the plump New York steak and the seared lamb chop. Save room for dessert and enjoy a simple pleasure like the coconut custard.
