Biwa Restaurant Review: Biwa offers dishes that present a trendy, innovative take on Japanese flavors. Meals typically begin with a bowl of complimentary popcorn. You'll also find sashimi and handmade pork dumplings, fried and pickled mackerel salad, deep-fried kimchi, ramen bowls with smoked pork shoulder, and miso-butterscotch gelato. Ordering small plates to share is the best way to go, and they deliver heaps of food. The late-night bar menu features unusual bites such as a burger paired with house-prepared kimchi mayo; goat curry rice with eggs, pickles and shiso; and fried rice with ground duck. Beverages include a wide selection of saké cocktails, shochu (a traditional spirit from southern Japan) and intriguing homemade sodas --- think sour plum and black pepper. Biwa can get crowded, and the five percent "Health and Wellness" charge on the bill may surprise patrons.
