Black Bark BBQ Restaurant Review

: Barbecue returns to the Fillmore by way of Black Bark BBQ co-owners Monetta White and chef David Lawrence (1300 on Fillmore). Texas influence oozes throughout a simple menu headlined by tender, 12-hour beef brisket and smoky spare ribs sporting a signature thick, black crust. Buttery pulled pork on a soft roll, dressed only with off-dry slaw, is the best we've sampled; we suggest soaking the slaw in the house's pepper sauce. Mac 'n' cheese is standard, but the meaty smoked mushrooms, brothy collard greens and a curiously delightful sweet potato-pecan casserole were well above par. A couple salads and desserts of cobbler, deep-fried bread pudding and sweet potato pie round out the menu. We suggest passing on the 11 draft beers and six wines in favor of the fresh lemonade and sweet tea.
