Blackbird Kitchen + Bar has redefined seafood dining for Sacramento. There are no statues of peg-legged seafarers in the corner, no fishnets on the ceiling, no lobster tanks from which to choose your meal. Images of the restaurant's namesake --- a nod to the blackbirds that flock over the region's fields --- grace the building’s façade, while the lofted interior maintains a rustic yet contemporary vibe. The menu shuns captain’s platters and admiral’s feasts in lieu of pure, clean offerings from the expansive raw bar, or fresh fish simply prepared with local, seasonal accompaniments. Starters include arctic char with vichyssoise and pan-fried sand dabs with pink peppercorns. The daily soup is always a winner; the house-smoked clam chowder has a devoted following, but our favorite is the seafood-free, smooth-as-velvet mushroom and leek with goat cheese and garlic. Mains include a whole roasted trout and seared day boat scallops, while the lunch menu offers several sandwiches, including a flavorful catfish torta with red beans and roasted jalapeño. The innovative desserts are a solid ending to a quality meal, and include the Meyer lemon panna cotta with blackstrap rum caramel, and peanut butter mousse with candied bacon.
