| Blue Plate Café is one of those dependable neighborhood restaurants you find in every town, sitting just a bit off the beaten path. But the comfort food offered here is beyond what many a "diner" purveys. Caesar salads come with many of the lunch dishes and are sprinkled with chopped pecans and croutons made from po' boy bread. Creative appetizers include the "bello bowl," a mixture of sautéed pieces of smoky mushroom with curried cream sauce and planks of dense polenta "fingers," which are not too different from grits cakes. Then again, a lunch visit may turn up a homey plate of spinach-stuffed pork roast served over garlic mashed potatoes. The burgers are oversize, juicy and dependable. Desserts are mostly ice cream based. Wall-to-wall windows offer good people-watching. This place is packed at lunchtime, but even if there is a line, the wait is generally not longer than 15 minutes. Blue Plate does not serve alcohol. |
