 Few would expect a nondescript, tan storefront in the rather gritty south section of Culver City to house a café of such charm and creativity. But Bluebird Bakery has done much to sweeten the harsh environs with a wraparound bar spilling over with cake trays filled with coconut-frosted cupcakes and oversize banana-nut streusel muffins. Breakfast consists of egg sandwiches, fruit and baked goods. At lunch, the options are lengthy and include pizzas cooked on the grill and that L.A. staple, the chopped salad with salami and chickpeas. But dessert is where Bluebird excels. Owner Audrey Bernstein built her rep as the cake baker to the stars. And though she continues to service her star-studded clientele, her moist layer cakes, petits fours and petite cupcakes are now available to the rest of us.
