| For the past three decades, this unadorned diner has served basic, plain food, calories and all, in the American way: big portions. Unlike many of its modern counterparts, this is the real McCoy with no contemporary frills. It’s also one of the best bargain-eats places in town: You can enjoy a full dinner of, say, four pieces of fried chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy and veggies plus a beverage for less than you might pay for a fancy-restaurant appetizer elsewhere. The staff knows many customers by name. Breakfasts of eggs with steak, corned beef hash or pork chops, or possibly a pecan waffle, can start or finish your day. Otherwise, find hefty meat and seafood entrées, sandwiches, subs and fresh baked goods. The chocolate meringue pie is mighty tempting. |
