The Washington branch of this French steakhouse and brasserie, which also has locations in New York, Miami and Tokyo, is lively and lots of fun. On warm days, the umbrella-shaded tables make the large front terrace a prime location. In inclement weather, we like the comfort of the turn-of-the-century Paris brasserie setting with its pressed-tin ceiling and mismatched lighting fixtures. Les Halles is the kind of place where you soon discover things you like so much that you never order anything else, such as the hanger steak served with the best pommes frites in town or the homemade shredded pork confit. If you want a real dinner bargain, the steak frites-salade platter is excellent. Desserts include splendid gâteau Basque and crêpes Suzettes.
