Brick & Bottle is a high-quality American roadhouse, upscale hangout and stylish bar and grill rolled into one. The open kitchen is a focal point for live fire and culinary bustle. There’s a masculine edge to this restaurant’s subtle gold walls, dark wood tables, plush oxblood leather banquettes and booths. The separate bar (you can also dine there) is huge, with a social scene all its own. Chef-owner Scott Howard and his team turn out plenty of dishes under $20 that emphasize local and organic ingredients. Buttermilk chive biscuits are loaded with green onion. Pizzas from a wood-fired stone oven are smoky, chewy and full of flavor; the savory duck confit version with caramelized onions and Fontina cheese is indulgent with toppings. Fritto misto is an enormous portion, all about crackly, tempura-light coating on a mountain of assorted mushrooms, fennel, green beans and lemon slices. Salads, which change seasonally, may combine Bing cherries and corn with Bloomsdale spinach and pecorino cheese: esoteric. Expect to find hearty entrées such as smoked pork shoulder with cider vinegar glaze and jalapeño slaw, or a fat, eight-ounce burger with a homemade Cheese Whiz-like topping. Desserts include what may be the best butterscotch pudding in Marin.
