As good neighborhood restaurants go, it doesn’t get any better than this North Center spot, with its charming setting --- lots of dark wood, a welcoming communal table, a cozy bar in the back --- and wallet-friendly, flavorful fare. Chef Sean Sanders, formerly of Bin 36, creates contemporary American cuisine with an emphasis on greenmarket ingredients, some from the restaurant’s rooftop garden (this eco-friendly slant comes into play throughout the dining experience). The menu features a mix of large and small plates, like chewy, creamy wheat berry and corn risotto or Canadian walleye atop fennel-apple purée with slaw, wild mushrooms, smoked corn and fennel flower. Sharing is definitely a good option. Desserts are straightforward, such as the chocolate chip cookies (recipe courtesy of Sander’s grandmother); fittingly, they're served with a glass of organic milk. Adding a touch of quaintness, the restaurant is named after a simple, but memorable, meal the chef-owner and his wife prepared while hiking on their honeymoon in New Zealand.
