On a busy street in the industrial enclave of Emeryville, nestled between Berkeley and Oakland, sits this warm and personable neighborhood restaurant filled with regulars. In the mornings the espresso machine creates a constant buzz and pastries line the curved bar. Sunshine dapples the outdoor tables and shines in through the giant south-facing windows onto the exposed brick walls of this reclaimed warehouse. Lunch and dinner offer similar menus with approachable dishes that could satisfy a celebratory table as easily as a lone diner nuzzling up to a newspaper at the bar. A spinach salad arrives bursting with bright green leaves topped with pink pickled red onions, chopped egg, olives and feta cheese, and the Caesar salad is a fine rendition of the classic. Individual pizzas are blessed with a crisp crust and a revolving list of tasty toppings. Entrées are hearty, from the grilled salmon with shoestring potatoes to the braised pork with a ragoût of fresh peas and wild mushrooms. A strawberry trifle with Muscat zabaglione and balsamic sauce is upscale in contrast to the homey hot fudge sundae with vanilla bean gelato. Look for a shortened menu of soups, salads, panini and cocktails at the bar weekdays from 2:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
