Your first impression of Buck’s is that every surface is covered with a giant vase of white flowers. Actually, some room has been left on the tabletops for the artfully mismatched china, crystal and silver. And a further mix of between-the-war antiques enhances the feeling of being in your wealthy Southern grandmother’s dining room. The food's a bit mismatched, too, because Buck’s has a little trouble deciding whether it’s Southern or Continental. Some dishes, such as the beef tenderloin with Boursin cream, are very good because the chef keeps it simple. On the other hand, the mixed seafood Caribbean is a jumble of conflicting and confusing flavors including jerk spices and coconut. The grilled pork chop with Calvados is among the reliable main dishes. And when the spicy Cantonese noodles with chicken (beef or shrimp can be substituted) is on target, spice lovers should order it. The accommodating servers will even have it made with all three meat and seafood ingredients if you wish. Do beware that some nights the noodles can suffer from a too-heavy application of the salt shaker.
