| This Hastings on Hudson eatery is a little taste of rustic French life on the wrong side of the Atlantic. A widely held tenet of French cooking is to avoid flavors that compete for attention. Buffet De La Gare's cuisine takes this principle seriously. Order the duck and taste a crisp outside met with a moist inside in the cassoulet toulousain with navy beans, duck confit, hickory smoked bacon, chipolata and garlic sausage. The braised sweetbreads in a vermouth emulsion are prepared with authenticity. The décor boasts plenty of tiles and bright colors---the product of a renovation a few years back---but otherwise, it is still what one might expect from a longstanding French restaurant: beautifully appointed tables in two rooms avoid the sometimes cafeteria-like feel of a vast space. It also pre-empts excessive noise; in fact, disappearing music and whispers from a mostly distinguished crowd are the only background sounds here as adept servers take your order and clear your plate of roast chicken. A notable wine list and desserts like the tarte Tatin round out the experience. |
