| Nothing about the exterior of Buona Sera led us to expect the ambitious, stylish restaurant within. The quiet side-street location and minimal signage lowers our expectations, but one glance at the menu raises them again. There are some standard pastas and a pair of pizzas, but also steak and lobster carpaccio with truffle oil; veal with prosciutto and amaretto sauce; and pappardelle with pheasant and morels. Daily specials take advantage of the best of the farmers market, and if it's white truffle season, the kitchen will take advantage of the bounty. A timballo of tuna and grilled vegetables disappoints because of its overly strong bell pepper sauce. The wine list has an extraordinary selection of Italian and Californian bottles, but few offerings by the glass, and mark-ups on the high side of reasonable. The main room is a bit cramped and noisy, but the two small rooms in the rear offer more space and better acoustics for those who prefer a quiet meal. |
