Named for either the prefix code operators used in the days of rotary phones or the 1935 novel or the 1960 movie, this Midtown restaurant-bar boasts a pub grub menu that matches its elevated surroundings. Plush booths, high ceilings, Art Deco flourishes and ornate chandeliers almost seem incongruent with the battalion of plasma TVs flashing sports. But that’s part of the novelty; especially when your mac ‘n’ cheese arrives, complete with jalapeños and bacon. Or when you take your first bite of smothered chicken, served with creamy mashed potatoes and caramelized onions. Likewise, the grilled cheese with prosciutto on thick-cut Texas bread and the blackened tuna sandwich will make you wish for double overtime.
