C & O Trattoria Restaurant Review: This slightly cheesy trattoria, a favorite since 1969, is only a block from the Pacific, and the casual vibe wafts east. Help yourself to the honor wine bar and sing along when the waiters belt out “That's Amore,” which they do at least once a night, then dig into heaping plates of reasonably priced Italian food that draws consistently big crowds. The “killer garlic rolls” live up to their name, especially when slathered with savory black olive spread. A wide selection of pastas is offered, either in individual or “gargantuan” (family-style) sizes. Linguine pescatore is loaded with sea creatures, including swordfish, salmon and shrimp, plus artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes, all bathed in a garlic, butter and white wine sauce. Mama Leoni’s meatloaf is blanketed with melted mozzarella, sautéed onions and roasted peppers. Chicken pepperonata treats chicken breast to a prosciutto wrapping and a stuffing of mozzarella, garlic and spinach, with roasted red pepper-spiked tomato sauce. In addition to the help-yourself wine, a page of modestly priced Italian and California labels are offered. For dessert, finish with homemade tiramisu. At breakfast, you’ll find frittatas, waffles and eggs Benedict.
