THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Cafe Allegro Restaurant Review: Family-owned and operated since 1986, Café Allegro is a favorite for romantic fine dining. Situated in adjacent Victorian buildings on historic Bedford Square, the prettily appointed restaurant offers a lively bar, open kitchen and intimate dining rooms on two floors. Fine art posters, fresh flower arrangements and genial service create a comfortable ambience. The wine list presents intriguing selections, particularly in Italian labels, with a wide assortment of wines by the glass. The seasonal menu specializes in the flavors of the French and Italian Riviera. Carefully sourced ingredients are pristine, and everything, including breads, desserts, even the pickles, is house-made. Expertly prepared fish is a standout---especially the signature grilled citrus-marinated calamari, soft-shell crabs in season and chef Nolan's bouillabaisse. The kitchen works wonders with grilled beets, asparagus, pastas and vegetarian platters. For meat fans, there's the signature filet mignon, with dark beer and Gorgonzola cheese sauce. Don't miss the wonderful homemade ice creams.
