Dining room at Cafe Bernard, Chicago, IL

With more than three decades under its belt, this is one of the longest running --- and most popular --- French bistros in Chicago. It's affordable, pleasant, Left-Bank casual --- and a bit rustic. The food runs the usual bistro route; mussels steamed in white wine, cream and shallots, and anise-scented roast chicken manage to stand out. Also winning is grilled North Atlantic salmon with Cabernet Sauvignon sauce. Then again, lobster ravioli and scallops in balsamic reduction offer a bit of a departure from the norm. Pâtés are only passable, but the chocolate mousse is mighty fine.
