 Tricked out in bold colors, bright tile, Mexican art and rugged vigas that stretch across the length of the ceiling, Cafe Castro is a vibrant mainstay on the Santa Fe circuit, in part because the New Mexican eats are turned out by a kitchen that believes in delivering consistency---and consistently good food. It's a hangout for locals, reclaimed locals and tourists sussing out some of the city's best New Mexican food, prepared straight-up without pomp and circumstance. The menu is a litany of New Mexican favorites: blue corn enchiladas smothered in red or green sauce (or both), pork tamales, chile rellenos, taquitos, tostadas and puffed sopaipillas the size of a small building. The green chile won't make you drop your jaw to the floor in agony and defeat, but it leaves a measurable burn that's best washed down with a glass of sangría.
