HURRICANE KATRINA: this establishment is currently closed. For a New Orleans Travel Update as well as resources, information and help click here. It hasn't always been easy to find anything French to eat around the French Market, besides beignets of course. Café de Mello is housed in a beautifully restored produce warehouse, offering crêpes sizzled on a hot iron in the aromatic French tradition. While not all of the fillings are farmers market-fresh (which is a shame considering the propinquity of the produce market), many are creative. The Lasagna Crêpe may be the biggest surprise, its filling like a rich Italian bolognese; breakfast crêpes are also recommended, especially the Crêpes Benedict topped with lemony hollandaise and the huevos rancheros, filled like a breakfast burrito. Much like the French Market, Café de Mello mixes contemporary and vintage aesthetics. The building's original sky light emits sunshine on even the darkest days, offsetting the heaviness of the exposed brick walls and reflecting off the shiny tile floors.
