With lush Howard Chandler Christie murals of cavorting nymphs, opulent floral arrangements and a lavish pastry display, Café des Artistes is one of New York's most beautiful old-fashioned restaurants. Patrons celebrating a special occasion will appreciate the festive ambience, and to start the evening off right should order a Champagne cocktail at the tucked-away bar. Expect new takes on traditional dishes---like sturgeon schnitzel with cucumber salad, rémoulade sauce and roasted potatoes, and grilled barbecued pork loin served with savoy cabbage slaw. Desserts include a Cabernet pear tart and a too-tempting dark chocolate fondue for two.
