| It looks a little like the South of France crossed with South Beach, but Café Gitane is pure Downtown. Lots of cigarette smoke (after 6 p.m.) and coffee drinking goes on, with designer types and poseurs mixed in with neighborhood regulars wearing Downtown designer clothes and Sigerson Morrison shoes. And then there's the food. It's amazing what the kitchen staff can do with a small oven in a tiny kitchen. You'll find lots of couscous, good salads, the popular aioli (Parmesan, spices and chiles on focaccia) and a variety of seasonal tarts (we love the lemon) as well as excellent fresh mint tea and a teensy eccentric but well-chosen wine list. |
