He has returned to us at last, this chef who has glorified culinary tables from Hong Kong to New York. But times have changed. Goodbye gold, marble, crystal, linen napkins and princely platters! Hello brasserie! Café Gray is friendly and convivial, where sitting elbow-to-elbow you delight in food that's hearty and invigorating. With Gray Kunz, the brasserie tradition becomes classy, even ennobled---and the crowds love it, especially for lunch. The décor is animated with its play of light and mirrors, and the open kitchen right up front becomes a scenic foreground to the view of the trees in Central Park behind. It's clear that the show to watch is in the kitchen, not outside. There's theater in the dishes, too, with more than a hint of the Big Easy in the braised wild king salmon with crawfish etouffée and watercress bouillon. There are also a few nods to Central Europe and Gray’s Austrian roots, with skate schnitzel with capers, walnuts, apples and cauliflower. You might desire something more straightforward, like the classic pork chops with green lentils or the roll of lamb with fresh kidney beans. Of note among the desserts are the original cherry-almond soufflé, and the apricot and Italian meringue topped with a custard crème chiboust. And don't neglect the beautiful selection of cheeses. A private dining room for 60 can be reserved for special occasions as well. The wine list has been kept simple unlike the prices of the offerings.
