Dining room at Cafe Laguardia, Chicago, ILIntimate and affordable, this leopard-printed spot packs a punch. Lots of hearty, reasonably authentic Cuban fare mixes it up with traditional Mexican dishes like tacos and burritos. But for our money, Cuban is the way to go because big flavors come from the small kitchen. We like the Havana black bean soup, the roast pork Cuban sandwich and the ropa vieja (flank steak that is cooked to the point of shredding). For the ultimate Cuban experience, the Sabor de Cuba, or Taste of Cuba, has to be considered. There’s not a weak link in this food chain with its medallions of fried pork, ground beef and shredded beef, ham croquette, fried plantains, rice and cassava. End with comforting rice pudding (arroz con leche) or flan.
