Like this place's owner, the food is larger than life, boldly flavored, and Italian-American.

Cafe Martorano Restaurant Review

: No one ever accused this Italian-American restaurant's chef/owner Steve Martorano, originally a South Philly DJ, of subtlety, and the same is true of his eatery's boisterous ambience (dominated by loud classic R&B personally DJ’d by da man, in between kitchen duties) and big portions of boldly-flavored Italian-American food. In recent years Martorano, who says he's a cook not a chef, has occasionally introduced chichi dishes with truffle oil, etc.; ignore these. What you want are the famous meatball salad (a softball-size, soft sphere served with richly porky-flavored tomato “Sunday gravy," a dollop of ricotta, and old-school olive oil/vinegar-dressed greens); always-al dente pastas like garlicky linguine with fresh-shucked clams; anything including the fresh homemade mozzarella (like veal Parmesan with mozzarella plus Parmigiano-Reggiano, San Marzano tomatoes and fresh basil). The wine list is mostly Italian and mostly too expensive, but an affordable Rocca della Macie Chianti matches the food and mood well.
