 In the Kawaihae Shopping Center, wedged between the commercial Kawaihae Harbor and a small canoe paddlers' pier, this well-established Italian eatery remains a favorite, reasonably priced alternative for the Kona-Kohala Coast hotel restaurants. Kawaihae is one of the hottest, driest places on the Island and, in Café Pesto, the cool air offers a welcome respite. We recommend starting with the fresh basil crostini---creamy, herbed garlic butter on homemade French bread. Or try the seared fresh fish poke with spinach, pickled ginger and tamarind-honey vinaigrette. You can taste the Asian and Island flavors that influence the restaurant's menu in this dish. Don't pass up the risottos or pizzas, like the chili-grilled shrimp pizza with shiitake mushrooms and cilantro crème fraîche. We are passionate about the ganache, a chocolate torte with raspberry purée that melts in your mouth. Also located at 308 Kamehameha Ave., Hilo, 808-969-6640.
