Comfortable ambience meets fine dining in this Midtown classic. Established in 1987 by Michel Leny, the restaurant was sold to Cullen Kent in 2007. Leny remains as manager, while Kent is executive chef. Though the food is clearly Americanized, chef Kent’s French training is evident. Smoked pork chops are paired with tomato fricassée, and chicken liver beignets and bacon-wrapped shrimp are offered as appetizers. The French-style onion soup is perfect on cold afternoons, and vegetarians will be pleased with the portobello napoleon stuffed with farmer’s cheese, spinach and roasted peppers. French flavors continue in dessert, in such classics as crème brûlée and the lemon cheesecake beignets. The wine list, which lists vintages, offers plenty of good choices, including a substantial number of half bottles. French and American selections rule.
