Cafe Tropical Restaurant Review: Che Guevara is well represented on the walls of this circa-1976 Silver Lake café, owned by Jeff Bey of Hollywood Billiards. Don’t miss the pressed turkey sandwich, highlighted by thick slices of salty grilled gobbler, gooey Swiss cheese, cool tomato and crisp iceberg lettuce. Cubano and medianoche sandwiches are standouts, both oozing pork, ham and cheese, the latter on sweet yellow bread instead of the standard white. Whatever you order, wash your sandwich down with a silky shake: mango, mysterious mamey or the beguiling guanabana. Cafe Tropical’s always-packed dessert case contains everything from blueberry turnovers to chocolate napoleons and honey horns, but the house specialty is undoubtedly the guava and cream cheese pie. The sweet treat pairs well with a fresh-pulled shot of espresso.
