Cafe Zoolu Restaurant Review

: Owner Toni Leech and her husband and chef, Michael, run this neighborhood bistro, which is a real hit with locals. Located just one block from the beach, Café Zoolu thankfully lacks pretension, offering instead funky Laguna charm. Chef Michael’s dishes all have a certain Polynesian or Asian flair, such as the blackened ahi sashimi with avocado, grapefruit and a Thai ginger-horseradish sauce. Start with one of Zoolu’s signature salads, like the char-broiled scallop salad, which features mixed greens with tomato, bacon, egg, roasted red pepper and a warm honey-mustard dressing. For entrées, try the baseball-cut swordfish, a house signature, in a lemon-caper butter sauce. Other intriguing entrées often available include the 20-ounce cowboy steak served with green peppercorn sauce and a horseradish mash, fresh ono charbroiled and paired with a soy-ginger sauce, and the salmon in a hoisin barbecue sauce, topped with cucumber salsa and accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes. Most of the desserts are memorable, especially the malted milk ball ice cream and the Zoolu chocolate cake.
