An intimate, slightly funky eatery with lots of rustic charm, the Canteen appeals to locals and industry operatives alike --- even an occasional celeb. They settle into cozy booths beneath oversize vintage bullfighting posters, which might explain a number of Basque and Spanish dishes coming out of the kitchen. Most of the menu, however, is dominated by more traditional French or Italian fare, well-priced and well-prepared. Starters include a modified Niçoise salad with fresh ahi, escargots, fried calamari and unique pelote Basque (balls of spinach, garlic and pine nuts in red pepper-tomato sauce). For entrées, look for rib-eye au poivre, salmon filet with a delicate dill-butter sauce and pork loin medallions with apple-brandy sauce.
