Carmen's Cuban Cafe Restaurant Review: Carmen’s is the oldest Cuban eatery in the Triangle area, and arguably the best. Order a powerful mojito cubano with tamales, empanadas or fried plantains, or be adventurous and taste several exotic appetizers on the Havana sampler. Continue the adventure with arroz con pollo, snapper in habanero sauce, seafood paella or the house specialty, lechón asado, a fist-size chunk of pork butt slowly roasted until it's tender, under a mantel of caramelized natural sugars and fat. For vegetarians, there’s a vegetable sofrito served on yellow rice. Finish with flan or tres leches cake (either chocolate or vanilla), then, after 10 p.m. on weekends, dance the night away to Latin music. Don’t expect much in the way of wine, but the beer list offers a fair selection of American and Mexican brands.
