Finding this place will be your biggest challenge. Plus, North Hills isn’t exactly a bastion of fine dining. But once you get inside, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Richly hued walls with gilt mirrors and silk drapes surround chunky wooden tables and chairs. Chef Rolando Gonzalez helped Jennifer Lopez open her Latin-themed eatery Madre’s, but at his own Casa, he’s creating cuisine from his own homeland---Cuba. His mojo dipping sauce for the Cuban crackers and bread is addictive. The lunch menu is an abbreviated version of the dinner menu, with the addition of pressed Cuban sandwiches. Try the empanadas: crisp half-moon crusts filled with tender ground meat. The avocado salad offers half of the green globe with marinated onions and a tangy dressing over greens. The chicken fricassée is a flavorful bird stewed in a tomato-green olive broth with potatoes. Prawns are sautéed in garlic, white wine and olive oil. For dessert, the flan has a rich consistency more like cheesecake than custard. The prices, while high for this area, are certainly reasonable for the quality of the food.
