| For a taste of Oaxaca on the Lower East Side, this three-story fun house offers live bands and dancing on the first floor, a rowdy-ish bar area serving all types and strengths of mezcals on the second floor, and a more sedate dining area, gallery, and lounge on the upper level. Food is available throughout and ranges from appetizers like crispy fried grasshoppers and tangy ceviche to such mains as tacos---try the tender shrimp---quesadillas and chile rellenos in a creamy tomato sauce. Other specialties include chilaquiles: chicken, steak or eggs with sliced tortillas in green tomatillo or red sauce, with queso fresco and onions; or oversize toasted corn tortillas smeared with refried black beans and topped with avocado, Oaxacan cheese, tomato and chiles, with either chorizo or chicken. Most important, of course, are the potent margaritas. And don’t forget the house-made flan for dessert. |
