THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Catch-22 Restaurant Review:
The running theme throughout this Flatiron lounge and eatery may not be readily apparent: prints depicting World War II are tacked on the wall and the menu’s small plates are listed with the names of European countries next to them. But, as an attentive waiter might explain, Catch-22 is a nod to the 1940s and, specifically, to the Joseph Heller novel of the same name. The countries listed next to each dish are the nations that fought in the war. Fancy feasting with the French? Try the elderflower and sugar plum-cured foie gras. Don’t dig dictators much? That shouldn’t stop you from ordering the Spanish-inspired duck-and-rabbit-stuffed canelones in a tangy olive picada or the harissa-laced octopus. Curiously, the war’s primary antagonist, Germany, isn’t represented on the menu. But Japan is, in the form of a seared edamame-encrusted red snapper. It can all be washed down with a series of classic (aka World War II-era) cocktails.
