It takes some chutzpah to open around the corner from Hotel Biron and next door to Zuni Café, but fortunately, this sleek wine bar has some serious gourmands and oenophiles at the helm. Imbibers are encouraged by the quirky but friendly staff to explore the well-chosen list of over 300 international wines, with many offered by a taste, or the glass. The menu is built for cavorting with wine, like house-made charcuterie that includes a dreamily smooth chicken liver mousse topped with a layer of red wine gelée. The entrées may either be ordered as a small plate or a full portion. You'll want the latter when ordering the hearty and stew-like oxtail cavatelli with a spoonful of horseradish sauce. Sides like the ingenious cornmeal-crusted french-fried yams and the Brussels sprouts with bacon in a whole mustard sauce are both delights. And, at last, a cheese course that is served at the proper temperature and on par with some of the finer restaurants in the city. The space is modern-hip, including a long stainless bar and minimalist light fixtures above. Don't miss the fantastic cork art piece in the back area. |
