The interior of this old New Orleans townhouse has seen many incarnations, but this one may be the most relaxed and seductive. Last used as an upscale spa, the historic building is now home to Cavan, a restaurant that is hard to categorize. That is because one could easily stop by just for a cup of coffee or a cocktail, or a selection of small plates or a full dining experience. Although stately looking from the outside, inside the house retains much of its inviting residential architecture, from the crown moldings and crystal chandeliers to the aged wooden floors, over-size windows and sky-high archways between dining rooms. The second floor is divided into intimate spaces. The front yard has been converted into a lovely courtyard for outdoor dining. The food also defies categorization, and includes such delights as crab meat deviled eggs, a grilled octopus salad, perfectly seared scallops with jalapeño grits, and a dessert menu that features a daily changing layer cake and even a popsicle. Wines have been carefully chosen to reflect the eclectic dishes.
