| The operators of some San Gabriel Valley coffee shops (Wild Thyme, Shakers, Diner on Main) up the ante with this more upscale establishment. Sitting on a quiet stretch of Fair Oaks Avenue south of Old Pasadena---just across from the city’s Central Park---the space is comfortable and laid-back, with black-and-white photos of everybody from Marilyn Monroe to Larry Bird lining worn brick walls. Art Deco-inspired pendant lamps hang from a high ceiling over candlelit dark wood tables. Breakfast is big here, with nice renditions of old-fashioned favorites. In the evening, starters range from a trio of salmon-and-shrimp cakes bathed in chipotle cream and topped with red onion chutney, to chicken pot stickers or a balsamic-drizzled stack of tomatoes and cheeses. Thin-crusted pizzas are reliable, and entrées include beer-battered fish ‘n’ chips with lemon-jalapeño tartar sauce, Atlantic salmon Provençal and a plate of short ribs. |
