Chakra Cuisine brings some Bollywood sex appeal to Irvine's University Center. Fortunately, the opulent, hip décor is matched with flavorful traditional Northern and Southern Indian food and strong drinks. Start out with the fluffy garlic naan baked in the kitchen’s massive tandoor ovens. There are several “Chakratinis” to drink, but we find they taste like a not-so-fun mix of colorful Kool-Aid and alcohol. With the food, there’s no mistaking the traditional flavors and textures of satisfying Indian cuisine. Vegetarian dishes really stand out, like the chowk ki tiki, a light, battered veggie patty with a refreshing mint and tamarind sauce. Or, try any of the tandoori-grilled kebabs. Other entrées, like lasooni champen (crusted lamb chops prepared tandoori-style) and the Goan shrimp curry (whole shrimp in a tart and tangy tomato sauce-like stew) are authentic and quite substantial. |
