Chakra Cuisine brings Bollywood sex appeal via an opulent, hip décor as well as modern yet authentic Indian cooking to Irvine's University Center. Start out with the fluffy garlic naan baked in the kitchen’s massive tandoor ovens. “Chakratinis” are a mainstay, but be wary of these colorful cocktails, which taste like a mix of Kool-Aid and alcohol. With the food, there’s no mistaking the traditional flavors and textures of satisfying Indian cuisine. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are distinguished, like the kofta; finely minced vegetable and spinach dumplings simmered in cashew cream sauce. Or try any of the tandoori-grilled kebabs. Other entrées, like lasooni champen (crusted lamb chops prepared tandoori-style) and the Goan shrimp curry (whole shrimp in a tart and tangy tomato sauce-like stew) are quite substantial.
