 Chakra Cuisine continues to bring Bollywood sex appeal and modern yet authentic Indian cooking to Irvine's University Center. Fortunately, the opulent, hip décor is matched with flavorful traditional Northern and Southern Indian food and strong drinks. Start out with the fluffy garlic naan baked in the kitchen’s massive tandoor ovens. The “Chakratinis” are still on the menu, but be wary of these colorful cocktails, which taste like a not-so-fun mix of colorful Kool-Aid and alcohol. With the food, there’s no mistaking the traditional flavors and textures of satisfying Indian cuisine. Vegetarian dishes are distinguished, like the chowk ki tiki, a light, battered veggie patty with a refreshing mint and tamarind sauce. Or, try any of the tandoori-grilled kebabs. Other entrées, like lasooni champen (crusted lamb chops prepared tandoori-style) and the Goan shrimp curry (whole shrimp in a tart and tangy tomato sauce-like stew) are authentic and quite substantial.
