Once known as the Chameleon Café, this neighborhood charmer now has a soignée look. The jolly pumpkin-hued walls are gone, replaced by an ethereal green color scheme and low-key artwork. Chef Jeff Smith, an alumnus of Emeril’s in New Orleans, offers a seasonal menu of American fare, prepared with classical French techniques. We recommend his grilled duck breast and pan-seared rockfish with lump crab; sauces are first-rate, and his garnishes are as tasty as they are decorative. In summer, don’t miss the Maryland menu of local specialties, and the house-made charcuterie is impressive in any season. But although the food would be at home in the swankiest neighborhood in town, The Chameleon is a perfect fit for sweet, leafy Lauraville. A family business, the place is always warm and welcoming, the very best kind of mom ‘n’ pop joint.
