| There was a time in L.A.---a more innocent age with less traffic, lower real estate prices and a much less sophisticated dining scene---when the Chart House was considered a major night out. Perched over the beach, this particular Chart House’s spectacular view still draws a crowd. Much of the menu, focusing on the steaks and grilled fish that have spelled success for this multistate chain, is unchanged, but an attempt at more contemporary and eclectic concepts occasionally emerges. But it is safer, and perhaps more nostalgic, to stick with the standards at this temple of surf ‘n’ turf. Begin with lobster bisque or oysters Rockefeller before opting for a steak with sautéed mushrooms. And for dessert, consider the chocolate lava cake or mud pie, both signatures---and still in style at the Chart House. For a better value, and less potential for disappointment, consider happy hour.
