Phoenix has never been renowned for its vibrant downtown restaurant scene, but Cheuvront, a wine and cheese bar and restaurant owned by state Senator Ken Cheuvront, is altering perceptions. Tucked away on the ground floor of the Artisan Lofts, this cement-floored, urban space brings Cheuvront's passions (wine and cheese) together in one slick but comfortable setting. The California-heavy wine list is global, with almost three dozen by-the-glass selections, while France and Italy seem to dominate the cheese menu (with more than a dozen offerings on any given day). If you're lucky, you'll find favorites such as Reblochon, St. André, Explorateur, Stilton and Gorgonzola along with many more obscure selections. There's a short but more than adequate menu as well, featuring appetizers, salads, sandwiches and small plates such as lamb roulade. Two of the best offerings are the niçoise salad and the pan-seared scallops with kalamata olives, tomatoes and spinach on a bed of cappellini. If there's room for dessert, try the dried pear and raspberry napoleon.
