Veteran Pasadena restaurateurs Bob and Gregg Smith (Parkway Grill, Arroyo Chophouse) also have this lively French bistro in their repertoire, located in historic Old Pasadena. A massive antique bar anchors the front of the restaurant, which transitions into a spacious dining room in which French beverage posters line dark-wood walls. Bistro classics dominate the menu, and a wine list offers respectable selections from both France and California. The quality of the cuisine has improved markedly since the opening of Cheval Blanc, although prices have also increased significantly. Diners might begin with a respectable version of salade Lyonnaise, garlicky escargots, or for a lighter touch, beet salad with goat cheese. A basket of gougères (fluffy cheese pastries) is ideal for sharing. Steak frites, roasted leg of lamb and duck confit appear on the list of entrées, along with beef bourguignon or cassoulet. The steak au poivre, a generously portioned filet mignon, is bathed in a peppercorn-Cognac sauce. Finales include satisfying soufflés, tarte Tatin and profiteroles.
