We’ve often wondered why affluent La Cañada-Flintridge never had many high-end eateries or gourmet shops, but things are changing, at least in the specialty foods department. Chocolate Box Café is the kind of stylish chocolatier you’d only expect to find on the Westside. The quality of its chocolates is consistently good---perhaps no Jacques Torres or even Venice’s Jin Pâtisserie, but better than Godiva. The shop’s extensive collections include ganaches flavored with green tea, grappa, ginger and mango, while fillings in its classic Belgian-style chocolates range from various flavored marzipans to violet, lemon and rose. Truffles, infused with the essences of amaretto, chili pepper and Grand Marnier, are less successful. In addition, excellent espresso and gelato are served at this modern shop with a comforting palette of chocolate, mocha and honey.
