| Perched atop Laguna Honda may be the most surprising place to find a quaint French bistro, but Chouchou has found a home here on the only business block in the Forest Hills neighborhood. South-facing windows fill the narrow street-level dining room with sunlight on most days, perfect for leisurely weekday breakfasts of pastries and café au lait. At lunch, start with a heart-warming bowl of French onion soup before digging into a salad, tartine sandwich, or a savory croque monsieur. The charming staff, complete with accents, won't let new comers leave without trying the tarts. It seems the owner has another pastry shop in France, and the tarts reflect that fact with tender crusts encasing rich pastry cream and bountiful fruits. The dinner menu steps it up a notch. Steamed mussels are scented with shallots, fennel and white wine. A tender pork medallion gets a hint of the Alps with a white wine-mustard sauce and Swiss cheese-laced mashed potatoes. The chef's specialties circle back to the pastry realm with clay pot stews topped with a pastry shell lid. Try the hearty herbed lamb stew studded with baby vegetables. |
