| Visiting City Café is like a step back to a more gracious time but with better food than the old days. The menu, while not wildly adventurous, is contemporary, well presented and almost always enjoyable. The menu changes monthly, but winners such as the luscious tomato soup and tangy cabbage salad sautéed with bacon and Gorgonzola are always available. Afternoon tea is quite the thing with ladies who lunch. A dozen or so teas are offered along with small tea sandwiches, dainty little morsels of egg salad, Waldorf salad and cucumbers with dill, followed by a selection of fresh-baked pastries. At dinner, Asian-flavored striped bass happily shares menu space with old-school calf's liver with bacon and new-school pork tenderloin with a raspberry-chipotle sauce and cheddar grits. Desserts change daily and are all made in-house. |
