THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED City Tavern Restaurant Review:

A throwback tavern feel pervades at this comfortable, moody South Loop spot, where the menu, originally designed by Kendal Duque (ex-Sepia), is now overseen by Jackie Shen. The result is seasonally driven --- not to mention satisfying --- American dishes. Start with a flatbread; we’re partial to the version topped with apple wood-smoked bacon, apples and blue cheese. Plump Saison ale-steamed mussels with chorizo and deviled eggs with smoked salmon, tobiko and chive aïoli are can’t-miss, too. When it comes to entrées, feel free to point and pick, but know the Berkshire pork chop with grilled bacon and a whirl of acidic Banyuls vinegar is the stuff of dreams. Tasty, too, is the fried Amish chicken with lemon-rosemary gravy, offset by sweet acorn squash and bitter collard greens. And the burger? It’s deserving of the hype. Cocktails are key to the experience, with the complex milk punch leading the pack. As for dessert, the pistachio crème brûlée with brandied cherries is as good as any we’ve had. During brunch, looked for tweaked eats like pork belly Benedict on house-made biscuits and wild boar hash.
