| This is a classic case of what could be. With its sleek redesign and lovely sister restaurant in Santa Monica, Coast Restaurant & Bar---located in the Canary Hotel---could be one of Santa Barbara’s hottest tables. Unfortunately, the well-designed room is the restaurant’s best feature. Aside from its slick look, the other defining characteristics are an uninspired menu and general inconsistency. Inefficient service tends to mar the dining experience, although your server may treat you quite warmly. Burgers and entrée salads such as the Niçoise or Caesar are reasonably good, but the entrées one would expect to shine at a place that looks like this---local seafood stew, or halibut with panzanella salad, for example---come up woefully short. Sunday brunch offers some interesting variations on tradition. The eggs Benedict is served with shaved prime rib, while bartenders mix cocktails tableside on rolling carts. |
