Dining room at Cold Spring Tavern, Santa Barbara, CAEveryone likes the creaky wood floors at this 1886 stagecoach stop, which offers a weekly game-meat special, ranging from caribou or grilled pheasant to rabbit or kangaroo (every dinner comes with fresh baked bread and soup or salad). More commonplace fare includes hamburgers, meaty chili and barbecue sandwiches. There’s also sautéed duck breast with roasted shallot demi-glace and filet mignon. And don’t forget breakfast on weekend mornings: comfort food classics like country-fried steak and eggs, flapjacks, molasses bread toast and homemade biscuits and gravy. In the daytime, the jukebox jams out the tunes, and bikers roar up for burgers and bluegrass. By night, the roaring fire and rustic Old West theme turn the place into a nostalgic, romantic little haven.
