Chef Julieta Ballesteros (formerly of Mexicana Mama) redefines Mexican food with her stylishly sophisticated eatery in Chelsea that combines south-of-the-border specialties with the culinary passion of la belle France. The front of the restaurant offers soft lounge seating and a long polished bar that lines half of the rectangular space. Earthy hues and paintings by Ballesteros’s mother, del Bosque, bring warmth to the interior---much like the path that a Margarita Fuego burns after a sip. Everything here is classy with a subtle spiciness. A literal extra-large serving spoon of the homemade guacamole whets the palate for other appetizers such as the ceviche veracruz, poached shrimp with spicy green olive-roasted tomato salsa and avocado. Entrées include magret de pato en mole poblano (glazed Peking duck breast served with roasted plantains, pomegranate honey, crema and panela cheese, and corn enchilada). Desserts are likewise treated in a saucy style---the sponge cake soaked in three milks and mango syrup topped with dulce de leche ice cream will leave you longing for a sunny siesta.
